During my vacation I was faced with the challenge of having to get by without access to my beloved gym! Shock, horror & surprise! Was I going to end up out of shape, and with extra pounds of fat added to my not exactly spindly frame? Was I doomed to re-lapse into former habits of a long forgotten lifestyle? Such were my thoughts before leaving for picturesque Italy.
The Italian contryside is famous for many things, with gyms and other workout facilities not being amongst those. But they don't need them! They work in the fields on the farms, or use nature in general as a place to challenge their bodies. On top of this they have all these lovely foods, fresh from the producers, slow food being prepared even slower, and great wines, etc..
So what to do? Go with the flow was my course of action. So I used the dusty tracks running over the hills and through the wineyards for some memorable runs in the cool morning air, followed by cooling swims in the pool. Morning and evening I would do a few body weight exercises and that was about it.
When choosing what to eat I went for the authentic Italian foods, like homemade pasta, vegetables and meats. I cut out all the processed foods and beverages and relied on natural water for hydration. Between the three main meals of the day I ate only fruits and greens.
Net result was a fatloos standstill, possibly due to the pasta, which I loved a bit too much, and also due to inactivity, apart from the occassional run. But still not too bad, at least I find this quite acceptable, considering what the consequences could have been, had I been more careless in my choices. And re-reading Tom Venuto's, The Body Fat Solution, also reminded me of one established fact, that we may overlook from time to time in our search for the perfect workout or diet: A daily/weekly energy deficit must be established to ensure an environment where fatloss can take place. As simple as that!
So do not fear your travels or vactations, just do your best, make wise choises, and enjoy your time away from the daily routines and stress.
That was about it from your favourite no-nonsense JBF blogger, take care out there in fatloss land!
