Tom, it might be a very good idea to move this thread to a different place.  Your blog would an excellent place for it.

I think Scott is great!  I would say that his program where he interviews several fitness gurus is a definite must.  I found Jon Benson, Shawn Phillips, Nick Nilsson, Former Fat Guy Rob Cooper,  Tom Venuto (is he Ben Venutos brother, just kidding), Jim Katsoulis  (Program Yourselft Thin - a must program to automate your fatloss), etc. etc. from those interviews.  Scott Tousignant is a great guy, really passionate and someone who you can really trust.

My plans are getting back to basics.. big compound moves and strict form.  I purchased Jason Ferruggia's Maximize your muscle program which has so much great information and I will start to do basics now..

Concerning training programs I guess we all look for variation, but still with a safe base, in the form of a specific coach or program that we find suitable for us and our lifestyle. I guess that's why we ended up here on Jon's site in the first place!

For me its goodbye or see you later to Vince Del Monte, his programs are becoming more and more centered around his ambitions to become a fitness model, which is pretty far from mine!

My next venture will be Scott Toussignant, also known from this site, who just before Christmas launched his Metabolic Masterpiece program. Its based on old school exercises, kind of getting back to basics, and I think I will enjoy a return to a simple program, that doesn't require me to read hundreds of pages, and carry with me an extensive logbook, to be consulted between each exercise. I think this program will restore calmness and ease of compliance, and yet require a genuine effort to follow througt. You kind of like when you return to 7/14MM its like putting on a pair of old jeans, so comfortable and soft!

Well, lets see how it works out!

Yes, side tracked alright, but nevertheless interesting as .... Should we move this to a seperate blog? I am thinking about writing up a blog post around this subject, so unless someone beats me to it, then...?

Hi Markku, thanks for the advice. I am already doing what you suggest. This month my weight/resistance training will focus on quality, i.e. proper form instead of just moving the heaviest possible weight.

I have rewieved each and every exercise I have used during the MYM program, and I realize that in some of them I may have moved more weight, but it has been at the expense of proper form, thereby progress has not been real. So this will be my focus this month, no super sets, no drop sets, no extended sets, etc., etc.., just sticking to one exercise at a time, doing them properly.

In some of the exercises I have done, I have not engaged the correct muscles, at least not those I wanted to train. Through bad form, other muscles have joined in, which is ok if intended, but not as a result of bad form. And this goes both for compound and isolation exercises.

Nutrition plans based on high carb evening/late night meals also in some cases incorporate late workouts as well, but maybe not all. I know from practical experience that late carbs are not for me. My body simply refuses to process them properly, so I end up sleeping badly and storing the excess as fat. Late carb meals is one of the tweaks that don't work for me. But as you say, be open to new ideas, experiment a bit and see where it gets you.

Well, I'm off to bed, to get a good night's sleep, catch ya' all later!

Is it just an impression, or has this thread been side-tracked :) ? Interestingly so I might add.

I agree Markku, experimenting is key. True, there are tried and proven system out there, and we don't have to reinvent the wheel. However, that's especially true for "newbies" as they are more likely to get results pretty much on any plan rather than staying on the couch eating chips and chocolate and burgers (I'm simplifying, no offense!)

Once you get to a stage where you have leaned out close to your ideal or goal weight/size/BFP, yes you need to start experimenting because everyone's bodies react differently to the same protocols. I could do the same program as either of you two, and we'd all three have different results.

So yes, find a trainer "guru" you trust, who has programs you like to perform and go for it. Follow one program from start to finish and see what it does to your body,  switch to another protocol and compare the results. Use the best (as in giving best results for you) 2-3 times/year and chose one or two other protocols for variation in between the circuits of the favourite protocol.

Personal preference: 7MM with EODD :) and the occasional RFLB

I do like 1RM though I haven't managed to complete the entire program.

I have RTP (Real Time Physique, by Adam Waters) but I don't  "feel" it reading through it.

I've tried M.S. once before but wasn't mentally "there" to complete it.

I did Combat the Fat (Jeff Anderson) and got good results, but it's not something I want to repeat too often, just as a possible back-up plan.

Iron Doll (Karen Sessions) is complex; Holly's "Fit Yummy Mummy" sorry but the title turns me off, so no thanks :)

Of course, BFFM is still there, though not practical for most people's lifestyles.

Bottom line is variety - in training and sometimes nutrition protocols as well. However, I do turn around the neutron-core of 7MM/EODD as a general safe haven :)

It is interesting that some plans call for a high carb and high calorie intake in the evening.. and they seem to work.. so I guess you have to try out things.

I do think that you might have to cut down on the exercise.. maybe your cortisol levels are getting too high or you body has not recovered enough.

Experimenting is the key.

Oh no problem, the non-snapp was planned - back on the chain gang tomorrow :D (which is better to be honest, don't feel so bloated and stuffed with real food as with "reload crap" )

Comment by JBF Mentor Tom Mortensen on February 6, 2012 at 12:12pm

Try'n snapp out of it again, but if you believe in signs from above, this must be your lucky day(s). Reloads, refeeds, cheats, what have we, they are lifesavers!

Highly intellectual-scientific discussion :) and extremely interesting as figuring it out could help us get even leaner!

As it is, I just had a very non-SNAPPy birthday lunch at a local Chinese buffet :) my fortune cookie said someone good looking was thinking about me constantly, and Joe's said he's in for a promotion ... worth the calories if it's true, lol

But basically, it was a "reload" before the first 12 days of M.S. starting tomorrow ...

You probably got it from Roman & Dan. At this very moment they are bombarding our collective mailboxes with some serious hype about a new nutrition program called Fatloss Forever. This program has intermittent fasting, 16hr cycle, as part of its basic structure. Nothing new in that, so I wonder what else they will be offering, but I am still undecided whether to check it out, but will let you know if I do.

I am already testing the 16 IF in my nutrition program, which is a mix of many of the programs I have seen over the years, with EODD still providing the main structure.

Yes I get your point about low metabolism during the night, and this proves my point exactly. We all agree (I think=) that eating a big meal, with plenty of carbs (fuel for muscle work) right before going to bed is a bad idea. For various reasons, but mainly because your muscles are practically at rest, only your basic body functions use fuel, so the unused carbs stand a good chance of being converted into fat, unless of course your liver can dispose of it in other ways.

We may get to the bottom of this, or maybe not, but interesting discussion nevertheless!
