Seriously?

I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened the message center on my computer at work yesterday.

Not so much for the pot-luck desserts, that's bad as far as empty calories, and frankly about 95% of the people working at the Call Center should go on a healthy nutrition plan and use the gym right outside the large office-cubicle space, but ... ok. For most of them, calories is not uppermost in their minds, nor is healthy eating.

What shocked me the most was the PJ part - I mean yes, you see people walk around town and shopping, wearing pajama bottoms. And frankly, I find it offensive. Not because I'm a prude at all, there is simply a certain dress-code that's been taught me from I was a kid, and wearing PJs outside the house is not part of that!

Wearing them to work?! True, we're not in contact with the public, but still.

Of course, I don't even have PJs and won't go in nothing! The most "bedroomy" I can wear is a pair of poodle-slippers with pink ears (don't ask!), and I suppose I can bring those, maybe! But even if I did have pajamas, I flatly refuse to wear them in public! So ... my solution? Training pants and floppy, velour sweat-shirt which was part of a house-pajama-suit I once had (the bottoms I threw away a few years ago).

Pot-luck desserts? Being served with free coffee/tea/hot chocolate ... am I indulging? Nope. May have a coffee or tea, but not sure that I will yet. And bringing a healthy dessert ... not worth it :) not with that bunch.

I am working on a couple of the ladies closest to my cubicle, I've got one to switch to plain yogurt with berries added herself - sent her an article on sugar content in bottled/cartoned juice etc, and slowly getting her to understand that she needs to eat more of the better choices rather than cutting calories too much. Still trying to get her to join me in the gym though.

Changing your colleagues' ways is a delicate and potentially dangerous balance act. Over the past 3-4 years I have only managed to influence my colleagues in small ways, but nevertheless healthy living and exercise is now a subject, eagerly discussed several times a week.

Today net result is: 2 ladies are taking Zumba classes twice a week. One lady is training for a ½ marathon, already able to run 8-10km. Same lady has started using her bicycle to work. A new colleague runs as well as sea kayaking. As I re-read this paragraph, I suddenly realize, that this is not so bad after all! And I have done no persuading, no threatening (after all I am the boss!), no sweet talking, but just brought the subject up whenever appropriate.

Now what to do about the last 2 inactive couch potatoes? I think I'll start talking about the "3rd age", how to manage your retirement, how maintain your physical capabilities, enabling you to stay out of the old folks' home, even if there are some fine ones around!

Keep it up Sarah, your attitude and enthusiasm will rub off eventually, but it's a long haul!

It is - I've noticed one woman in particular, sitting at arms' length from her keyboard because her stomach won't let her get closer, munching on Cheezies or other unhealthy snacks constantly.

Another is so huge her head looks ridiculously tiny on top of the "fleskeberg" (literally mountain of lard).

Actually, only 3 or 4 (other than myself) could wear latex clothing and get away with it - and there are close to 100 people working in there! Sad, ain't it!?!

"It is, really. What other species even questions what to eat or how much? Where are our instincts? Killed by civilization, or just "in a coma"?"

"Yes, that's nice. You can do your workout whenever and however you like. Just be careful if you workout alone, with no-one to assist you if things get too heavy, you could get hurt. But I guess you know yourself and you limits well by now.…"
